Wunderbar! Hugo Weaving to play the Red Skull

Just as we’ve got our collective breath back from the righteous peek at Chris Hemsworth as Thor and right before the US gets to gawk at Iron Man 2 this Friday, Marvel confirmed today something we’d been wishing would come to fruition since the casting rumours started: Hugo Weaving is playing the Red Skull in Captain America: The First Avenger. Decepticons around the world rejoice.

According to Marvel, Weaving will play an “updated” version of Johann Schmidt, the lovable scamp recruited into the Third Reich by Hitler himself. Did I say lovable scamp? I meant grotesque bastard. How exactly he’ll be updated is unknown, but we’re guaranteed some fantastic hero vs. nemesis action with Chris Evans’ boyish charm (on top of some badass acting – go watch Sunshine, ye who doubt) opposite Weaving’s deliciously evil acting history. Hot damn. July 22, 2011 can’t come soon enough.

We are at a total loss for more info here.

About Jen

Once upon a time, in a small English seaside town you've probably never heard of unless you've seen Fawlty Towers, a girl dreamed of running off with the AT-AT toy that a neighbourhood's kid had. She never succeeded - probably because she was too small to pick it up - and still doesn't own one (dammit!), but her love of most things geek-shaped stuck. Almost exclusively a Marvel fan, Jen decided that a cool thing to do would be to fly out of England and land in San Diego to attend that Comic Con thing everyone was talking about. Somehow she managed to meet a fine young man named Kevin there, and moved to Atlanta at the end of 2009 to spout her crazy slang and endless sarcasm at him. When she's not hanging out with belugas and whale sharks she likes to express her comics-related enthusiasm by getting into silly debates on the internet and making costumes (oh dear), most of which are Mockingbird's. Contender for World's Biggest Clint Barton Fan after Jim McCann and a lover of ridiculous puns. Kevin neglected to mention that their fish is called Betta Ray Bill.
