Our first COSTUME SPOTLIGHT focuses on Sasha -V, a talented costumer from the humid southeast! Check out her amazing costumes and read all about this talented young lady we’ve come to call a good friend here at theComicBookNerd!

  1. Name you prefer to be called: Sasha -V (most people develop a headache trying to spell my formal name)
  2. How did you get into costuming? Well, when I was little I always used to watch Saturday morning cartoons, and this was back in the day when they showed Sailor Moon, Ninja Turtles, ScoobyDoo, and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers! As I got older, it got me more and more into comics, anime, and manga. Somewhere along the way, in high school, I discovered that there were conventions and when I saw that people actually dressed up as their favorite characters, I thought “Wow! That looks so amazing and fun! I want to do that”. And I’ve been making costumes ever since. <3
  3. Whats your favorite costume you’ve made? It would definitely have to be either Sally Jupiter (Silk Spectre I) or Zombie Mary Jane
  4. What aspect of costuming do you most enjoy? least enjoy? My least favorite aspect is how time consuming some costumes can turn out to be! My favorite; picking out the fabrics and seeing the results!
  5. What materials do you enjoy/hate working with? I don’t really have a favorite or most hated fabric. Every type of fabric has some kind of trick up its sleeve, the key is just figuring out the best way of working it, whether it’s with your machine or by hand.
  6. What costume are you working on currently? ”If I told you, then I’d have to kill you.” …Hah! Just kidding. :) I actually like totry and keep my costumes a surprise, that way if a costume is taking me much longer to make than I originally expected then no one will be disappointed if it doesn’t debut for a specific event and the completed costume can debut a little later.
  7. What costumes are on your “to be made” list? There are a few… but I’m not naming any names! However, sometimes when I get really excited about a costume piece, I post preview photos online.
  8. What’s the most difficult prop/accessory you’ve made? Does Zombie Mary Jane’s bloody and rotting belly count as a prop? Otherwise I do make some small accessories (hair pieces, hand held items, jewelry, etc) but I don’t really like to make that many big props. Call me Minimalist Girl, but I don’t like to wear or carry huge props just because it can get really exhausting, takes up a lot of space, and really hinders mobility.
  9. Do you work with costuming professionally? I do! I work as a Costume Designer and Stylist for independent films, shoots, and events and as a Fabrication Specialist at Universal Studios Orlando, bringing parks and special event costumes to life!
  10. Do you have a favorite convention? MegaCon! Of course, it’s in my hometown! Next is Dragon*Con and San Diego Comic-Con. They’re all different types of conventions so they’re my favorite for those reasons.
  11. Biggest pet peeve about costuming? Sometimes people really don’t understand how much time, money, and energy some costumes require. It really drives me crazy when people leave everything to the very last minute. Sometimes I get requests for one-of-a-kind, original, and very specific costumes for a cast and they want it the next day, on little to no budget. …Are you trying to give me a heart attack? I understand budgeting and time crunches, but let’s be realistic here.
  12. Are there any other costumers whose work you really enjoy? Yes! Whenever I see really good or amazing costumes in person I always like to go up and let them know. I love chatting about costumes! I also have some favorite Costume Designers but that’s kind of a long list. :)
  13. Any tips or tricks you’d like to share? If there’s something you don’t know, don’t be afraid to ask someone! Or Google it. (It works! I can vouch for this.)
  14. Please tell us about one of your most memorable moments while costuming! My most memorable moment in costuming is getting the chance to work with and helping Ms. Jany Temime for the grand opening of The WizardingWorld of Harry Potter. It was an amazing and fun experience and I’m so grateful and glad that I could be a part of it!
  15. Anything else you’d like to share? Naaa, I’m sure I’ve already talked an ear off. :)
  16. Do you have a website you would like to plug? Twitter? Where can people see MORE of you?
My website: www.sasha-v.com is my complete directory with info, photos and videos of all my costuming works.

About Damian

A native of Glastonbury, Connecticut, Damian has lived in Los Angeles for more than four years. Having worked in front of, behind, and above the camera, he has become a “Jack of All Trades” in the entertainment biz. Damian has collected comic books since he was five years old, dressed up as super-heroes since he was six, and occasionally gets paid by companies to portray them at conventions across the country. More important, he uses his awesome powers for good. Several times a year he collects donations from movie studios, toy companies, and comic book shops, so he can don the tights and cape of Superman for visits to children’s hospitals and the City of Hope’s annual cancer survivors picnic. Damian is currently working on several ongoing web series. In his spare time he enjoys slaying damsels and saving dragons in distress!
