Last week, a lifelong Superman fan was robbed of more than 1,800 Superman comics and collectibles.
The victimized fan is 48 year old Mike Meyer of Granite City, IL. Mr. Meyer is mentally challenged, lives off of disability, and supplements that by working part-time at McDonalds.
If this isn’t enough to break your heart, you probably don’t have one. Scratch that. I think this is enough to upset Metallo, who has a lump of Green Kryptonite where his heart used to be.
It seems that a former co-worker of Mike’s (known only as Gerry) approached him at his local comic shop and asked to see his collection. Mike, wanting to share his love for the strange visitor from another planet, invited the man to his home. The next night, Gerry showed up with a woman he claimed was his girlfriend, asking to watch Superman movies with Mike. While Mike and the woman watched movies, Gerry is said to have “disappeared for a while.”
Later that evening, Mike noticed the items were missing and called the police. No details have been released, as this is an ongoing investigation.
Stolen were over 1,800 comics from Mike’s collection, along with over 100 figures, statues, and collectibles. Among these were most of his most prized possessions, as Gerry had previously asked Mike to show him the most valuable items he owned.
As this story has made it’s way around the web, an outpouring of love and donations from comics fans all over the country has flowed in. Fans are donating comics, art, and collectibles of their own. There are several locations accepting donations, and a facebook page has been created for Meyer.

Particularly wrenching were the following quotes from Meyer.
“I have never felt so much love in my life; I no longer feel like the Frankenstein monster. I feel that people understand me now, for the first time in my life.” -Mike Meyer
Mike added: “Do good unto others and every man can be a Superman.” (attributed to a Superman comic from the 1960′s)
This absolutely hurts my feelings, and I will be sending a care package filled with items from my personal collection to help out.
Donations can be sent to Mike’s friend Bill:
