The Facts

  • Real name: Seymour Fine
  • Grade E-4 Specialist
  • Born in Geraldine Montana
  • Primary Weapon: L-LAT (laser assault targeting weapon)
  • Experienced marksman (I would hope so seeing he is part of an elite military unit)
  • Known as slow moving easy going guy (With an outfit that bright I think “slow moving” is a rather unfortunate attribute.)

Sculpt/Paint

Sci Fi borrows a few parts from previous Joe figures, his torso and upper legs are from 25th anniversary Snow Serpent. Everything else appears to be fresh. I dig the removable battery packs attached to his legs although I am not sure what they are powering… his cool metal boots perhaps? Or maybe it powers the neon green suit he’s wearing? The vest is removable and is a great update to his original. His forearms are a bit bulky and make it hard to pose him with his gun being held with two hands. His face sculpt is nothing special, but I do like the fact that he has a cap on underneath. We have two choices for helmets a totally covered blast style helmet ala Skywalker training sessions and an original style reminiscent of Robocop. As a kid Sci Fi was Robocop for me… I am sure that Geraldine Montana is a short drive from Detroit … right? Seymour is painted nicely in his fluorescent green, silver and black scheme, the details are great and the accent painting on his gun and backpack are professional model making quality, way to go Hasbro production line!

Articulation

Sci Fi features12+ points of articulation. His legs pose well and he can really replicate the kneel and aim position well, his forearm padding makes it a bit difficult to hold his gun properly and both hands having a trigger finger is a bit of a perplexing decision. The mixing of the pose able wrist joints and the bulky padding on his forearms really detracts from this figure over all but hey, he is pretty damn awesome.

Accessories

The fact that he comes with two helmets is a win and adds a great dynamic to this figure, the backpack is a faithful reproduction of the original with really crisp molding and as stated above the paint details are saaaaweet. His gun is a masterpiece of sculpting and detailing, this reminds me of a sculpt you would get from Marauder Gun Runners (a rocking aftermarket weapon supplier for 3.75” action figures) the hose leaves a bit to be desired and is much thinner and kinks easily compared to the Joe hoses of yore. This could be remedied with a search online for reproduction hoses.

Pros

  1. Excellent paint apps
  2. Great sculpt with mostly original parts
  3. Two helmets… heck yeah!
  4. Did I mention how sweet this gun is, I seriously want more of these and I will buy more Sci Fi figs and customize them and have a unit of slow moving easy going laser troopers!

Cons

  1. Bulky forearms make it difficult for him to hold his gun in certain poses
  2. Kinky hose (not the good kind of kinky folks)
  3. Powered boots?
  4. Mediocre face sculpt, it’s just not interesting.
  5. Trigger finger pose on each hand.

One of my personal favorites of the 86’ line is reborn and well worth the wait. He was always kind of goofy and reminded me of a cross between Robocop and Luke Skywalker, but damn I love this goofy fluorescent green laser trooper! Yo Joe!
